What White Balance Is

White balance is the correction that makes neutral things — whites, grays, and blacks — actually neutral, free of any color tint. Once your neutrals are right, every other color in the image falls into place, because the whole photo was shifted by the same cast. Fixing white balance is usually the first move in color correction: do it before contrast, before saturation, before grading.

Recall the anchor rule from Color Theory: equal Red, Green, and Blue values equal gray. White balance is simply the act of getting the R, G, and B of your neutrals back into balance.

Why Cameras Get It Wrong

Your eyes adapt to the color of light automatically — a white shirt looks white under a warm lamp or a cool sky. A camera has no such adaptation unless told; it records the light's true color. Auto white balance guesses, and it guesses badly when a scene is dominated by one color, lit by mixed sources, or shot in shade.

💡 Correct, Don't Erase

Not every cast is a mistake. Golden-hour warmth and candlelight glow are part of the photo's charm. Aim to neutralize unwanted casts while preserving the light's intended character. White balance is a dial, not a switch.

The Fast Way: Auto White Balance

GIMP's automatic option is a good first attempt on many images. Go to Colors → Auto → White Balance. GIMP stretches each channel so the darkest and lightest pixels become pure black and white, which often removes a mild cast for free.

⚠️ When Auto Fails

Because it works from the extreme pixels, Auto White Balance is fooled by a bright colored object or a deep colored shadow — it may over-correct or introduce a new cast. If the result looks worse, undo (Ctrl+Z) and switch to sampling a neutral instead.

The Reliable Way: Sample a Neutral

The most dependable method tells GIMP exactly what should be gray, and lets it rebalance the channels to match. GIMP's Curves tool has eyedroppers for this.

  1. Open Colors → Curves.
  2. Find the three small eyedropper buttons (black point, gray point, white point).
  3. Click the gray-point eyedropper, then click a spot in the image that should be a neutral mid-gray.
  4. GIMP shifts the channels so that spot becomes neutral — and the whole image follows.

If there is no obvious gray, sample a spot that should be near-white (like a white wall in shadow) with the white-point eyedropper. The trick is choosing a target that is genuinely supposed to be colorless.

🎓 Shoot a Reference

Professionals photograph a gray card in the first frame of a set. Back in GIMP, sampling that card sets a perfect white balance you can then copy to every image shot under the same light. If you control the shoot, a cheap gray card saves hours.

The Manual Way: Curves by Channel

When there is no neutral to sample, correct by eye using per-channel Curves. In Colors → Curves, switch the channel dropdown from Value to a single channel and drag:

  • Too blue? Lower the Blue channel or raise the Red.
  • Too orange? Raise the Blue channel or lower the Red.
  • Too green? Lower the Green channel (adds magenta).

Nudge in small amounts and keep checking a spot you know should be neutral with the Pointer dialog until its R, G, B values converge. GIMP 2.10 also offers a dedicated Colors → Color Temperature slider that shifts the blue-yellow axis in one control — handy for quick warm/cool corrections.

Judging the Result

Trust the numbers, then trust your eyes. After a correction, sample your neutral again — if R, G, B are close to equal, the balance is technically right. Then step back and check skin tones: healthy skin should look warm and alive, never gray or greenish. If a "correct" balance makes skin look lifeless, warm it back a touch; pleasing beats perfectly neutral.

  1. Three methods, one photo. Take a photo with an obvious cast and correct it three ways — Auto, gray-point eyedropper, and manual Curves. Compare which looks best and note why.
  2. Mixed lighting. Find a photo lit by two different light sources (window + lamp). Try to balance it and observe why a single correction can't fully fix both.
  3. Keep the mood. Correct a golden-hour photo just enough to remove the excess cast while keeping its warm character. Decide where "correct" and "pleasing" meet.
