What a Color Cast Is

A color cast is an unwanted tint spread across an image (or part of it), pulling every tone toward one hue. Casts come from the light source, from colored surfaces bouncing light (a green lawn tinting a face), from aging prints, or from a cheap scanner. Where white balance tackles the global cast from the light, this lesson widens the toolkit to stubborn, uneven, and localized casts.

🎨 An Analogy

A cast is like tinted sunglasses on the whole photo. Everything is shifted the same direction. The cure is to add exactly the opposite tint until the world looks neutral again.

Spotting a Cast Objectively

Your eyes adapt to a cast in seconds, so measure instead of trusting first impressions.

  • Sample a neutral. Use the Pointer dialog on something that should be white, gray, or black. Unequal R, G, B reveals the cast and its direction (highest channel = the cast's hue).
  • Read the histogram. If one channel sits shifted relative to the others through the midtones, that color dominates.
  • Look at shadows. Casts are often most visible in near-neutral shadows, which should be a colorless dark gray.

💡 Name It Before You Fix It

Say the cast out loud: "the shadows are cyan, the highlights are yellow." A named problem points to a specific channel move. Random slider-dragging just trades one cast for another.

Fixing With Per-Channel Curves

Curves is the most precise cast remover because you can correct a cast that differs between shadows, midtones, and highlights.

  1. Open Colors → Curves and choose the channel carrying the cast.
  2. Click a point on the line at the tonal range where the cast lives (low for shadows, middle for midtones).
  3. Drag it a small amount: down to remove that color, up to add it. Removing the dominant channel is the same as adding its complement.
  4. Re-sample your neutral and repeat on other channels until R, G, B converge.

Iterate: measure, correct the dominant channel, measure again.

Fixing With Color Balance

Colors → Color Balance is friendlier when the cast varies by tonal range. It gives you three sets of sliders — Shadows, Midtones, Highlights — each on the Cyan-Red, Magenta-Green, and Yellow-Blue axes. Because the axes are named as complementary pairs, correction is intuitive: a cyan shadow is fixed by nudging the Shadows slider toward Red.

Tick Preserve luminosity so your correction changes color without shifting brightness. Color Balance is ideal for the common "warm highlights, cool shadows" cast that a single global move can't address.

🔍 Example

An old scanned print looks yellow overall but its shadows are muddy-brown. In Color Balance, pull Midtones toward Blue to kill the yellow, then pull Shadows slightly toward Blue and Cyan to clean the brown. Two targeted moves, one clean image.

Local and Mixed Casts

Sometimes only part of the image is affected — a face greened by grass, a subject lit by a window while the room glows orange. A global correction would wreck the rest of the frame. The answer is to correct on a masked layer:

  1. Duplicate the layer (or add a correction on its own layer).
  2. Apply the cast correction (Curves or Color Balance) to fix the affected area.
  3. Add a layer mask and paint black to hide the correction everywhere except where the cast is.

⚠️ Mixed Lighting Reality Check

When two light sources of different colors overlap, no single correction is perfect — fixing the warm area pushes the cool area too far. Correct each region on its own masked layer, and accept that a natural-looking compromise often beats a technically perfect but patchy result.

Practice Activities

  1. Diagnose five. For five casted photos, sample a neutral and write the cast direction (which channel is highest) before touching a tool.
  2. Two tools, one cast. Remove the same cast with per-channel Curves and with Color Balance. Note which felt more controllable.
  3. Local fix. Take a portrait with a green bounce on the skin and correct only the face using a masked adjustment layer.
