The two tools that do most of the heavy lifting in tone and color

Levels vs. Curves
Levels and Curves both remap tones β they take input brightness values and output new ones. The difference is control. Levels gives you a few precise anchors: black point, white point, midtone gamma, and output limits. Curves gives you a flexible line you can bend anywhere, for unlimited shaping. Learn Levels for clean setup moves; reach for Curves when you need finesse.

Mastering the Levels Tool
Open Colors β Levels. Under the histogram sit three input sliders and, below, two output sliders.
- Black point (left input): drag it right to the start of the histogram data so the darkest pixels become true black. This deepens shadows and adds contrast.
- White point (right input): drag it left to the end of the data so the brightest pixels become true white. This brightens highlights.
- Gamma (middle input): drag left to brighten midtones, right to darken them β without moving black or white.
- Output sliders: pull them inward to reduce contrast β raising the black output lifts shadows to gray, the foundation of a faded film look.
π‘ The One-Move Contrast Fix
Many flat photos are cured in seconds: drag the black and white input sliders inward until they touch the edges of the histogram data. You have just used the full tonal range, and the image snaps to life.
Mastering the Curves Tool
Open Colors β Curves. The diagonal line maps input (horizontal) to output (vertical). The bottom-left is shadows, the top-right is highlights. Click to add a control point, then drag:
- Drag a point up to brighten that tonal range, down to darken it.
- Add an anchor point and keep it still to lock a tone while you move others nearby.
- Steeper sections mean more contrast; flatter sections mean less.
π Anchor, Then Bend
To brighten shadows without washing out highlights, first place an anchor in the upper range to pin the highlights, then lift the lower part of the curve. Locking what you want to keep is the secret to clean, local tonal control.
Curve Shapes to Memorize

The S-curve is the single most useful contrast move you'll make.
Per-Channel for Color
Both tools have a channel dropdown. Switch from Value to Red, Green, or Blue and every move now affects color instead of brightness. This is how you white-balance, remove casts, and grade:
- An S-curve on the Blue channel cools highlights and warms shadows β an instant cinematic split.
- Lowering the Green channel's midpoint adds magenta to fix a green cast.
- Lifting the Red channel's shadows warms the darks for a nostalgic tone.
Everything you learned about complementary colors in Color Theory now becomes a set of precise, per-channel curve moves.
Working Non-Destructively
Levels and Curves permanently change a layer's pixels. To stay flexible, apply them to a duplicate layer so you can lower its opacity or delete it, or paint on a layer mask to limit the adjustment to part of the image.
β οΈ Watch for Clipping and Banding
Dragging Levels' black or white points too far clips detail into pure black or white β gone for good. Extreme curves on 8-bit images can cause banding (visible steps in gradients). Work in gentle amounts, and for heavy grading convert to higher precision via Image β Precision β 16-bit first.
Practice Activities
- Levels rescue. Take three flat photos and fix each with only the Levels black/white input sliders. Watch the histogram fill the range.
- Curve library. On one image, recreate each shape from the table β S-curve, inverse S, lifted black β and note the mood each produces.
- Color with curves. Apply a Blue-channel S-curve to give a photo cool shadows and warm highlights. Compare with the original.
