Why Perspective Matters

Even with perfect masking and lighting, an element shot from a different viewpoint will never sit right. A person photographed from above dropped into a scene shot at eye level looks tilted and wrong. Perspective matching aligns your element's implied camera — its viewpoint, angle, and scale — with the destination scene's, so both appear to come from one photograph.

Reading a Scene's Perspective

Three clues reveal a scene's perspective, building on Rulers and Guides:

  • The horizon line — eye level. Parallel lines (roads, rooftops) converge toward vanishing points on it. Its height tells you the camera's height.
  • Camera height — a low horizon means a low camera looking up; a high horizon means shooting down. Your element must be seen from the same height.
  • Ground plane — where objects sit. Everything resting on it recedes toward the horizon at a consistent rate.

💡 Find the Horizon With a Guide

Drag a horizontal guide to the scene's eye level (where converging lines would meet). An element placed so its own eye level sits on that same horizon will feel correctly viewed.

Placement and Scale

On a flat ground plane, objects farther away sit higher in the frame (closer to the horizon) and appear smaller. To place an element convincingly:

  1. Decide where on the ground it stands — that fixes both its height in frame and its size.
  2. Scale it so its size matches other objects at that same distance.
  3. Keep its base on the correct spot; a figure's feet must meet the ground where the perspective says they should.

Distance sets both position (height in frame) and scale together.

🎓 Transform on a Copy

Repeated transforms degrade quality. Do your placement in as few steps as possible (Unified Transform helps), and keep the untouched element on a hidden layer so you can start over from the original if a transform goes too far.

Focal Length and Distortion

Lenses shape perspective too. A wide-angle lens exaggerates near-far size differences and bends lines near the edges; a telephoto compresses depth so distant and near objects feel similar in size. An element shot with a very different focal length can look subtly wrong even when scaled correctly.

⚠️ Match the Look of the Lens

  • Wide scene, telephoto element (or vice versa) reads as flat-vs-deep mismatch — choose sources with similar focal length when you can.
  • Edge distortion: a wide-angle background bends lines; a straight-shot element pasted at the edge won't match. Use the Lens Distortion filter or place the element nearer the center.
  • Over-transforming to force a bad match softens and warps the element — better to pick a closer-matching source.

Practice Activities

  1. Find the horizon. On three photos, place a guide at eye level and identify the camera height.
  2. Scale by distance. Place the same element at two different distances in one scene, scaling each correctly.
  3. Align a plane. Use the Perspective tool to paste a poster convincingly onto an angled wall.
