Why Light Sells It
The human eye is exquisitely tuned to light. We instantly sense when a shadow falls the wrong way or a face is lit from an impossible direction — even if we can't say why the image feels "off." Matching light and shadow is therefore the make-or-break skill of compositing. Get it right and even an implausible scene reads as real; get it wrong and a technically flawless cut-out still looks fake.
Reading the Scene's Light
Before adding an element, analyze the destination scene's lighting:

🎓 Choose Well-Matched Sources
The easiest composite is one where the element was already lit like the scene. When selecting source photos, match lighting direction and quality first — it saves far more work than any masking trick.
Matching Light on the Element
Re-light the element to obey the scene using dodge and burn on a soft-light gray layer, or painted light/shadow layers:
- Darken the shadow side of the element to match the light direction (burn, or a masked dark layer).
- Add highlights on the lit side (dodge, or a masked light layer).
- Add rim light — a thin bright edge where a strong back/side light would catch — using a masked bright stroke. Rim light is a powerful integration cue.
- Tint with the light's color — warm highlights under golden light, cool fill in shade.
The Three Shadows
Real objects cast more than one kind of shadow. Believable grounding usually needs all three:
- Form shadow — the gradual dark side of the object itself, away from the light.
- Contact (occlusion) shadow — the small, dark, sharp shadow exactly where the object meets a surface. The most important for grounding.
- Cast shadow — the longer shadow thrown onto the surroundings, pointing away from the light, softening with distance.
Form, contact, and cast shadows together make an element sit in the scene.
Building Shadows in GIMP
- Cast shadow: duplicate the element, Alpha to Selection, fill black on a new layer beneath the element. Use Perspective or Shear to lay it along the ground away from the light, then Gaussian blur and lower opacity. Blur more toward the far end.
- Contact shadow: paint a small, tight, darker soft shadow right at the base where the object touches the surface. Keep it crisp and close.
- Form shadow: burn or paint dark on a soft-light layer clipped to the element's lit-vs-shadow sides.
- Tint shadows slightly toward the scene's shadow color (often cool/blue) rather than pure black.
⚠️ Shadow Mistakes
- Wrong direction — the cast shadow must point directly away from the light source.
- Too hard or too soft — match the scene's other shadows' edge quality.
- Pure black — real shadows keep some color and are rarely fully black.
- No contact shadow — without it the object floats even with a perfect cast shadow.
Practice Activities
- Read three scenes. For three background photos, note the light's direction, quality, and color.
- Full shadow set. Composite an object and add form, contact, and cast shadows matched to the scene.
- Rim light. Add a rim light to an element to match a strong back light in the scene.
