The Capstone

This is it — the project that ties the entire course together. Across ten modules you moved from opening GIMP for the first time to retouching, selecting and masking, color grading, compositing, painting, automating, and preparing work for the world. The final showcase asks you to use all of it at once: produce a small, cohesive body of polished work and present it as a portfolio. It's both a demonstration of your skill and the seed of the portfolio you'll carry beyond this course.

Complete and showcase a portfolio of 5–7 edited images that demonstrate the range of techniques you've learned across the course. Each piece should be finished to a presentable standard, exported correctly, and accompanied by a short note on what it demonstrates. Together they should tell a clear story about you as an editor and artist.

Treat this as a real project: plan it with a brief, gather assets, mock up compositions, execute, and deliver — the exact pipeline this module taught.

Show Your Range

Choose pieces that, as a set, prove breadth as well as skill. A strong showcase samples several of the course's disciplines:

Run the Full Workflow

Produce the showcase using the complete, professional workflow from Module 9 and this module — this is where everything converges:

  • Keep layered XCF masters and export polished, consistent deliverables (Module 9).
  • Embed copyright, watermark where appropriate, and organize everything.
  • Back up your masters — this is work worth protecting.

Present and Reflect

A portfolio isn't finished until it's presented. Pull the whole module's final week together:

  • Write a short case study for at least your strongest piece.
  • Apply your brand — consistent presentation, watermark, and bio.
  • Present the showcase — in person, on a site, or as a PDF — and invite critique.
  • Reflect: what are you proudest of, and what will you push further next?

Your showcase isn't a final exam to file away — it's the first version of a portfolio you'll grow and re-curate for years. As your skills climb, swap weaker early pieces for stronger new ones. What you finish today is a launchpad, not a monument.

Final Checklist

  1. 5–7 finished pieces that together show range across the course's techniques.
  2. Each planned from a brief, built non-destructively, and kept as a layered XCF master.
  3. Deliverables exported cleanly — web (sRGB, optimized) and, where relevant, print (300 DPI).
  4. The set curated and sequenced, strongest first and last.
  5. At least one case study, consistent branding, and a short note per piece.
  6. Presented and opened to critique, with a reflection on next steps.
