Selective Color Adjustment
Changing one color without disturbing the rest

What and Why
Selective color adjustment means changing a specific color — a red car, a blue shirt, the sky — while everything else stays put. It is the bridge between global correction and true retouching. There is no single "Selective Color" command in GIMP as in some editors; instead you combine tools you already know in three dependable ways, from quickest to most precise.
🎨 An Analogy
Global correction is repainting a whole room one color. Selective adjustment is masking off the trim so only the walls change. The masking is what makes it look professional.
Method 1: Hue-Saturation by Family
The fastest approach, from the previous lesson: Colors → Hue-Saturation, select the color family (say R), and shift Hue, Saturation, or Lightness. Perfect when the color you want to change is the only member of its family in the frame.
💡 When It's Enough
If a scene has one red object and nothing else reddish, changing the R family is instant and clean. It only breaks down when two things share a family — a red apple and red lips — and you want just one.
Method 2: Select by Color, Then Adjust
When you need one object and not its color-twins, isolate it first:
- Use Select → By Color (or the Select by Color tool) and click the target color. Raise the Threshold until the whole object is selected.
- Soften the edge with Select → Feather (a few pixels) so the change blends.
- Now apply any color tool — Hue-Saturation, Curves, Color Balance — and it affects only the selection.
Select first, then adjust — the classic isolate-and-edit workflow.
Method 3: Masked Adjustment Layer
The most flexible and non-destructive method paints the change onto a mask:
- Duplicate the layer (or make a dedicated correction layer above).
- Apply your color change to the whole layer — go bold, you'll mask it back.
- Add a white layer mask, then paint with black to hide the change everywhere except the target. Grays give partial effect.
Because the mask is editable forever, you can refine the boundary, feather it, or change your mind about strength via the layer's opacity — the hallmark of a professional, reversible edit.
Refining the Selection
- Feather selections a few pixels so edits don't leave hard edges.
- Grow/Shrink (Select menu) to tuck the selection just inside or outside an edge.
- Combine Select by Color with the free-select or quick-mask tools to exclude same-colored areas you want to keep.
- Zoom in and check edges — colored fringes there are the giveaway of a rushed selection.
⚠️ Beware the Fringe
Big hue shifts on a selected object often leave a rim of the old color at the edges. Shrink the selection by a pixel or two before adjusting, or paint the mask edge by hand, to keep the change convincing.
Worked Examples
🔍 Change a Shirt From Blue to Red
Select the shirt with Select by Color, feather 2 px, open Hue-Saturation on Master, and rotate Hue until blue becomes red. Because only the shirt is selected, skin and background are safe. Touch up any edge fringe on a mask.
🔍 Make Only the Sky Pop
Select the sky (Select by Color on the blue), feather generously, then apply a gentle Curves boost and a Hue-Saturation lift to the blues. The landscape below stays exactly as shot.

- Recolor an object. Change one object's color three ways — family shift, select-and-adjust, and masked layer — and compare cleanliness and control.
- Two reds, one target. Find a photo with two red items and change only one, using a selection to exclude the other.
- Sky enhancement. Boost only the sky of a landscape while leaving foreground colors untouched.
